Clubs and Activities

A cartoon knight mascot promotes Smalley Elementary Clubs & Activities.

  • Smalley Garden Club is a fun and exciting group for fourth graders, led by Ms. Ptack, Ms. Wright, and Mr. Mages. Students work together with fifth grade Garden Club members to plant and grow vegetables, fruits, flowers, and herbs for our school community. While making our school grounds more beautiful, students learn how to garden, discover which plants grow well together, and share interesting facts about different plants. Most importantly, they learn how to work as a team and take pride in growing something together

  • Smalley Drama Club offers 5th and 6th grade students an opportunity to explore elements of theater. Founded in 2020, Smalley Drama Club aims to provide young actors to find their voice and gain self-confidence. The Smalley Drama Club focuses on theater education and performance, all while strengthening critical life skills such as public speaking. Smalley Drama Club meets afterschool on Wednesday from 2:50-3:50pm each week. During this time, the students audition for, learn, rehearse, and perform a full play on our school's stage. This is a full show experience for the students; complete with playbills, microphones, set design and more. By the time the students reach the stage, the performance becomes student centered, where student actors and student stage crew work together to complete their roles and tasks. Smalley Drama Club aims to perform one show each year, with one nightly performance where parents and families are able to attend.

  • Robotics Club at Smalley Elementary School

The Robotics Club at Smalley Elementary School gives students an exciting introduction to the world of STEM—Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. In this club, students explore the basics of robotics by designing, building, and programming simple robots to complete fun challenges. Robotics combines creativity with problem-solving, allowing students to see how technology works while actively using their imagination.

Through hands-on activities, students learn important STEM concepts such as coding, engineering design, and logical thinking. Robotics encourages teamwork, persistence, and critical thinking as students test ideas, troubleshoot problems, and improve their creations. These experiences help students understand that mistakes are part of learning and innovation.

By participating in Robotics Club, young learners begin developing the skills used in many future STEM careers. More importantly, robotics helps mold curious, confident thinkers who are excited to explore technology and solve real-world problems. The club provides a supportive and engaging environment where students can discover a passion for STEM while building skills that will benefit them throughout their education and beyond.

  • The Spanish Literacy Club is a space where students come together to read, share, and enjoy books in Spanish. It helps students stay connected to their culture while building a love for reading in their heritage language.

The club was created because many of our students speak Spanish at home, but may lack a space where they can expand their reading and writing skills in Spanish. This club provides a safe and welcoming place where students can read Spanish books together, have meaningful discussions and enjoy the language while feeling confident and supported. This club provides the setting to foster group formation, and it also helps students feel less alone and prouder of their culture.

The participation of high school students has made the club even stronger, as they guide, support, and inspire younger students.

  • The Smalley School Newspaper Club is open to all Smalley students who are interested in contributing to our school newspaper. Members meet after school to write articles, conduct interviews, and share their creativity through book, video game, and movie reviews, as well as original poetry, short fiction, drawings, and comic strips.

Each grade level takes a turn producing one edition of the newspaper, which is distributed digitally to support environmentally friendly practices. Student reporters enjoy exploring topics that interest them while strengthening their writing skills and engaging in the full writing process. Our students take great pride in contributing to the newspaper and enjoy both creating and reading each edition.
